Being Overweight: Other Reasons Than Eating Too Much?
Take a look online, and you will find that most blogs and experts will say that being overweight is because you either ate too much or decided to become a couch potato who does no exercise whatsoever.
Of course, that is a good reason why you might be overweight, but it is not the only reason. The reasons why we are obese or overweight is in fact an entire area of medicine that has been studied extensively.
Okay, let’s start with the very basic problem – the lack of sufficient exercise. Even if you have a healthy diet, there is always a chance you could put on weight. The reason is simple – you are consuming more calories than you are burning, leading to a change in the energy balance. But why are we not getting enough exercise? Is it because we are just so busy at work that we cannot be asked to get off our backsides, or is it that we are just plain lazy? It might just be a combination of both.
Clinical studies have shown that sitting in front of the TV for more than 2 hours a day could increase your chance of becoming overweight. No surprise there right?
Need to go to the local shop? You may prefer to drive than walk it. There you go – another reason why you would put on weight.
Exercise aside, there are other reasons why you may become obese. Lack of recreation parks or gyms nearby is one reason. Being gullible to food adverts of companies that serve fast food that is “healthy and nutritious” is another reason. No biscuits are healthy – period.
Obesity may run in your family, and chances are that despite your best efforts, you may find that you did not escape your family’s genes and have ended up becoming overweight.
Stopping smoking is another reason why you may become overweight. Now you may think that this is counterproductive, but it really is good for you in the long term.
Clinical conditions such as polycystic ovarian disease and an underactive thyroid have been known to be associated with weight gain. So if you are worried about being overweight despite doing plenty of exercise, you may want to visit your doctor to get yourself checked out.
Finally, you are likely to know that a good night’s sleep is important to stay healthy, but what you probably did not know is that the lack of sleep can increase your appetite for unhealthy foods and thus raise your chances of becoming overweight. Make sure you get your nightly dose of shut eye to stay slim and healthy.
