Belly fat can be a troublesome condition and can affect self confidence to a great extent. Broadly classified, belly fat is the fat that is present under the skin over your belly and also within the abdominal cavity around your vital organs.

Belly fat accumulates over a period of time, and commences in your childhood. Unhealthy diets and occasionally a history of being overweight in the family can increase your chances of becoming obese and having a large amount of belly fat in and on your abdomen. If you enjoy your drink, be aware that regular alcohol consumption can increase the amount of fat around your belly.

There are a number of health risks that are associated with high quantities of belly fat. One condition that you may develop is diabetes. Many clinical studies have shown that having large amounts of fat in and around the abdomen can lead to a condition called insulin resistance. This is a condition where your body no longer responds to the insulin your pancreas is producing (insulin is a hormone needed to control blood sugar) and as a result your blood sugar levels increase. A high blood sugar level in your bloodstream is diabetes mellitus.

The primary problem with diabetes is that it increases your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. The excessive fat is responsible for narrowing of your blood vessels around your heart and brain, and heart attacks and strokes that result can sometimes be life threatening.

Another problem associated with high levels of belly fat is the increase in body weight. A high body weight can increase the risk of your joints getting affected by arthritis, especially the knees.

Cancer of the colon is a worrying condition and tends to be more prevalent in those who have excessive belly fat.

If you have high levels of belly fat, then it is time for you to make a change. Regular exercise and a healthy balanced diet that is low in fats and salts can help reduce the tyre around your waist.
